“Die with Zero” is a personal finance and life-planning philosophy introduced by financial advisor and author Bill Perkins in his book titled “Die with Zero: Getting All You Can from Your Money and Your Life.” The book challenges traditional notions of retirement and financial planning, encouraging individuals to optimize their life experiences and expenditures over their lifetime rather than focusing solely on saving for a traditional retirement.

Here are some key concepts and ideas presented in “Die with Zero”:

  1. Life Earnings Curve: Perkins introduces the concept of the “Life Earnings Curve,” suggesting that people should strategically plan and optimize their spending over their lifetime, aiming to have a higher spending allocation during their healthier and more active years.
  2. Three Buckets of Wealth: Perkins divides a person’s financial resources into three buckets: the “Go-Go Bucket” (early years for spending on experiences and adventures), the “Slow-Go Bucket” (later years for a more moderate lifestyle), and the “No-Go Bucket” (reserved for end-of-life care and inheritance).
  3. Spending on Experiences: The philosophy emphasizes spending on experiences and enjoying life to the fullest while individuals are healthy and can actively engage in meaningful activities.
  4. Redefining Retirement: The book challenges the traditional retirement model and suggests that individuals can have multiple phases of “retirement” where they scale back work and focus on experiences, perhaps returning to work later.
  5. Money as a Tool for Experiences: Money is viewed as a tool to enable experiences and enhance the quality of life, rather than simply accumulating wealth for the sake of amassing assets.
  6. Planning and Balance: While encouraging spending on experiences, the philosophy also stresses the importance of prudent planning, maintaining a balance, and ensuring one doesn’t outlive their resources.

It’s important to note that the “Die with Zero” philosophy has been met with both enthusiasm and criticism. Some argue that it offers a refreshing perspective on life planning, while others caution about the potential risks of overspending and not adequately preparing for unforeseen circumstances.

As with any financial philosophy, individuals should carefully consider their own circumstances, consult with financial professionals, and create a plan that aligns with their values, goals, and financial situation.
