when you visit Japan, Yakitori is really recommended food you should try.

Yakitori (焼き鳥) is a popular Japanese dish made of skewered and grilled chicken pieces. The name “yakitori” is a combination of “yaki” which means grilled, and “tori” which means chicken. It’s a beloved street food and also commonly found in izakayas (Japanese pubs) and restaurants.

Here’s a basic overview of yakitori:

  1. Ingredients: Yakitori primarily consists of bite-sized pieces of chicken, often including various parts such as breast, thigh, liver, skin, and cartilage. These pieces are skewered onto bamboo sticks or metal skewers.
  2. Seasoning and Sauce: The chicken skewers are typically seasoned with salt or a special yakitori sauce known as “tare.” Tare is a savory and sweet sauce made from soy sauce, sake, mirin (a type of rice wine), sugar, and often flavored with garlic or ginger.
  3. Grilling: The skewered chicken is grilled over a charcoal grill or sometimes gas grill, giving it a smoky and savory flavor. The chicken is usually brushed with tare sauce during the grilling process to enhance its taste.
  4. Variations: While chicken is the traditional main ingredient, yakitori can also include other ingredients like vegetables (such as green peppers or shiitake mushrooms), beef, pork, or seafood. These variations are often referred to as “yakimono” (grilled items) in general.
  5. Serving: Yakitori is typically served as individual skewers, and you can order them a la carte or as a set. It’s a common dish in izakayas, where it’s often enjoyed with drinks like beer or sake.
  6. Accompaniments: Yakitori is often served with side dishes like pickles (tsukemono), rice, or salad.

Yakitori is a beloved part of Japanese cuisine known for its simple yet flavorful preparation. It’s a versatile dish, and the grilling process can be adjusted to achieve different textures, from tender and juicy to crispy and caramelized.
